A policy of discrimination against Pennsylvania same-sex couples is causing wedding venues not only to lose business, but also giving them plenty of bad press in the local media. In the last few months many couples, both heterosexual and homosexual, have been inquiring about the policies of local wedding venues before deciding if they want to book a place for their wedding.
The issue is bigger than just the fight for marriage equality, which was won earlier this summer. Even straight couples getting married at a specific venue want to make sure that the venue they choose is discrimination free so that all of their LGBT family members and friends feel comfortable and accepted. Though most venues are open to all marriages on their property, there are a few that still choose to discriminate against PA same-sex couples, but they are meeting resistance from the public at large.
Due to the growing support of same-sex marriage and the legalizing of same-sex marriage in Pennsylvania, a whole new target market was suddenly available to wedding venues, catering businesses, flower shops, and all businesses that play a part in the wedding industry.
"Suddenly, same-sex weddings were legal and businesses had to step back and consider how they were going to deal with this," a Pennsylvania based wedding planner said. "It may be awkward now to ask about a vendors' policy, but as that information is given freely, the discussion will become less awkward."
The growth and expansion of the industry led to an event being held during PrideFest in Wilkes-Barre last month. Wedding vendors from all industries took part in the "Wedding Tent" with the goal of expanding its client base to include Pennsylvania same-sex couples who were in the process of planning their weddings.
