Children Coping With Divorce

Divorce is difficult for everyone in a family. Children deal with the emotional impact and physical adjustment to separation in very different ways depending on age. It is important to identify the struggles a child faces with divorce and use helpful tools to help them overcome these struggles and understand what they, and their parents, are going through.

Sesame Street has been successful in providing materials for children coping with lifestyle transitioning in the past. In 2006, they developed a highly successful program for children of military families dealing with constant relocation and adjusting to ever changing lifestyles. Building on the principals developed in this game, Sesame Street has been able to develop their new edition for divorce.

For children ages two to eight, Sesame Street offers an interactive approach to helping overcome the challenges divorce presents them. Little Children, Big Challenges: Divorce, is a workshop that provides tools for parents and children to aid in comprehending divorce and adjusting to their new lifestyles. The workshop also educates families with the appropriate language and communication styles to use when coping with divorce. The workshop includes a DVD about divorce, a parent and caregiver guide, a children’s storybook, a mobile resource app., an online toolkit, and much more.

It is important to connect with children on a level they understand. Using interactive and relatable characters from their everyday lives has show to be a very positive and successful approach.
