Friday Family Law Facts: Celebrity Prenups

By: Lisa Marie Vari

Prenuptial agreements are popular among celebrities. And this makes sense, as both spouses are well-known, have many assets, and lots and lots of money that they would want to protect from equitable distribution in the event of a divorce. Because so many celebrity marriages tend to end in divorce, celebrity's family law attorneys advise them to enter into a prenup to protect themselves. In today's blog we take a look at some of the most interesting clauses included in a few celebrity prenups.

Although any couple getting married can seek a prenup, the average couple's prenuptial agreement is usually somewhat standard. Celebrities, however, often include very interesting and unique provisions in their prenuptial agreements.

Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake: Though the new parents seem happy as can be, they built in an anti-cheating clause into their prenup. When examining various celebrity prenups this seems to be pretty common. In this case, If Justin cheats Jessica is entitled to approximately half a million dollars.

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban: If the couple divorces Mr. Urban is entitled to $640,000 per year for every year the couple was married. It's not so easy for him, however. If he uses illegal drugs, he gets nothing, regardless of the length of the marriage.

Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen: A similar clause to Justin and Jessica, Denise and Charlie had a clause in their prenup that would award Ms. Richards $4 million if Mr. Sheen ever cheated on her.

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas: This celebrity couple also has an anti-cheating clause in their prenup, providing Ms. Zeta-Jones with $5 million if Mr. Douglas cheats.

Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom: This might be the most lavish and detailed prenup we've encountered thus far. It included a clause that upon divorce, Khloe will receive $500K for each year the couple is married, plus additional monthly payments of $5,000 for shopping, $1,000 for beauty care, and $25,000 for support. And as we all know the prenup was put to work after their split. On top of the money, she got the couple's house, a new car at the end of each lease term, as well as season courtside Lakers tickets for herself and the whole Kardashian clan.

However, these clauses are not necessarily representative of most prenups.
