Calculating Pennsylvania Child Support Payments

By Lisa Vari on Google+

In the midst of a Pennsylvania divorce or Pennsylvania paternity action the primary concern of many of our clients is child support. They always want to know either how much child support they are going to have to pay or how much child support they will be getting for their child. In order to have them an estimate about the monthly amount, we turn to the Pennsylvania Child Support Guidelines, the subject of today's blog by your Western PA Child Support Lawyers.

The amount that will be paid per month in child support is determined by the above mentioned guidelines. The guidelines are based on a mathematical calculation which takes into account several factors including the monthly income of both parents and child related expenses that each parent pays each month. The amount you will be ordered to pay monthly also takes into account the number of children you have and the amount of time each parent spends with the child.

If you want to know exactly what other factors are used to make this calculation and want to see these numbers prior to meeting with a Pennsylvania child support lawyer, the Pennsylvania Child Support Enforcement Service provides parents with a free online child support calculator tool. With this, a parent can input the requested information and find out approximately how much they will have to pay per month.

Now you may be wondering why I said "approximately" when I previously said that the monthly amount was based on these guidelines. Well, the number you get from the online tool will be an estimate because there are other considerations which may allow you to deviate from that exact number. What that means is that that number you get from the calculator is the number you should pay monthly, but payments you make for school, insurance, or other things will be factored into that equation when the case comes before the court so you may end up having to pay less than what that calculator indicates.

Confused? Don't be. We know that you may not be aware of all the payments and factors that can be used to deviate from the monthly child support amount you get from the calculator, which is why we are here. If you use the online tool, but want to know if there is a possibility that a deviation may be in order because you pay for your child's health insurance, for example, it is in your best interest to contact a Pennsylvania Child Support Lawyer.
