Dinner With Your Ex An Alternative To Splitting Time With The Kids On Thanksgiving

Hardly six months after she filed for divorce from her husband of 5 years, Katie Holmes is on her way to Telluride, Colorado to spend the holiday weekend with her ex, Tom Cruise. Are they getting back together?! Well… sort of. Like many divorced parents this year, Katie and Tom are reuniting for Thanksgiving dinner, for the sake of their six-year-old daughter, Suri.

A source close to Katie and Tom said that the exes are committed to showing their daughter that they can still be civil to each other and maintain a semblance of family togetherness for the holidays. Katie and Tom know that spending the holiday with both of her parents will mean so much for Suri, whose 2012 has been rocked by the power couple’s split and the resulting shared custody arrangement. Family insiders say that Thanksgiving has always been a really big deal for the Cruise clan and the devoted parents don’t want that to change in the wake of their divorce.

Across the country, the long-standing holiday tradition of traveling far and wide to spend the holiday with loved ones is in full swing today. But, with married adults divorcing at a rate two-and-a-half times the rate adults did 20 years ago, many families are ushering in a new trend for the holiday season: true family togetherness.

When parents divorce, the struggle to keep children’s lives as normal as possible is an everyday battle. Whether you’re following a 50-50 shared custody arrangement, or one of you is the primary caregiver and the other only gets a few weekends with the kids, divorced parents are forced to constantly work together to make their children’s schedules work. But when the holidays roll around, it’s a whole new ball game. Thanksgiving is only 24 hours long, after-all. And how many Thanksgiving dinners can one kid really eat?

So if you and your Ex think you might be ready to bury the hatchet for the holidays (or maybe just for one dinner), consider hosting one Thanksgiving dinner that everyone attends. Of course, such an endeavor will likely prove challenging for the adults, but just think about how excited the kids might be to spend Thanksgiving with both mom and dad!
