Divorce: A Laughing Matter?

Just something our Pittsburgh Divorce Lawyers have been thinking of recently:

Is laughter really the best post-divorce medicine? For many, a divorce is a tragic and emotional experience. Not unlike grieving the death of a loved one, divorcing spouses often experience cycles of emotion that are strikingly similar to the five stages of grief. The Kübler-Ross model, commonly known as The Five Stages of Grief, include denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. First hypothesized in her book On Death and Dying, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, proposed that individuals facing death or surviving the loss of a loved one, commonly experience these five stages, in no defined sequence, when faced with the reality of loss. But is it possible that there’s a sixth stage marked by humor?

At our Allegheny County Divorce Law firm we’ve found that while our clients frequently experience a range of negative emotions throughout the divorce process, many find an outlet in humor. Like the other stages in the Kübler-Ross model, it seems to be the case that people reach this stage at different times and sometimes, not at all. If you’ve ever found humor to be a helpful outlet for your frustration, it’s comforting to know you’re not alone. The gravity of emotions involved with divorce hasn’t stopped some celebrities from poking fun at their situation.

• “Ah, yes, divorce…from the Latin word meaning to rip out a man’s genitals through his wallet.” – twice-divorced Robin Williams.

• “A lot of people have asked me how short I am. Since my last divorce, I think I’m about $100,000 short.” – Mickey Roony

• “Last time I did an MTV show I ended up marrying someone. Tonight I’m going to keep my eyes peeled for my next wife.” – Russell Brand
