Reunited And It Feels So Good? Pennsylvania Divorce And Reconcilation

Maybe there’s hope for love after all! We may do business in Pennsylvania divorces, but sometimes there’s nothing better than getting a call from a client indicating he or she has reconciled with their spouse. It doesn’t happen often, but every once in a while a separated couple will re-kindle the romance after separation.

Take Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman for example. Following news of the couple’s shocking separation in October 2012, People magazine now reports that the couple is back together! DeVito, 68, and Pearlman, 64, had been married for more than thirty years and played the role of a married couple on the TV show Taxi as well as the 1996 film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Matilda. The couple, who first started dating in 1971, managed to keep their marriage woes out of the limelight and had been quietly working on their marriage off-screen. A friend of the couple told People magazine, “They love each other, always have and always will.”

Though the obvious advantage to reconciliation is regaining your marriage and your spouse’s partnership, Pennsylvania couples considering divorce should also consider the potential ramifications of reconciling with their estranged spouse. If you should ultimately decide to pursue a divorce after reconciliation, some of the potential disadvantages to be aware of include:

  • Possible reduction in your share of the marital estate at equitable distribution;
  • Possible loss of your claim for alimony, support, or APL; and
  • Possible of your right to claim injured spouse status in support proceedings and during equitable distribution hearings.

Although news of reconciliation is often greeted with smiles in our office, we’re always sure to warn our clients that a failed reconciliation could have harmful effects on their Pennsylvania divorce matter. If you’re considering reconciliation and want to know more about what effect it may have on your case, contact our office to speak with an experienced and knowledgeable Pennsylvania divorce lawyer.
