Economic Indicators Of Divorce?

Divorce is going international: with trends such as a rise in “gray divorce” and increasing numbers of studies trying to figure out ways to end divorce as we know it, the spread of divorces is extremely fast and global. In China, where until recently divorce was a rare and infrequent occurrence, new economic and cultural changes are leading to a rise in the divorce rate.

Interestingly, some of the indicators are similar to those seen in this country. Like the divorce rate here, the Chinese are seeing an increase in divorces accompanied by some familiar economic indicators. As China moves towards a more capitalized, urban economy, divorces appear to be increasing accordingly. Surveys done of the younger generation of Chinese, generally born after the advent of the One Child Policy (a government policy meant to bring down the population by only allowing every couple to have one child, with some exceptions), indicate that people are increasingly looking out for their own well-being and happiness, instead of being tied down in an unhappy relationship.

Adding to that, the housing market in the large cities, home to the increasingly mobile and affluent professional class, has begun to deflate, making additional housing available and affordable. As we have seen in the United States during the Great Recession, increasing wealth and affordable housing have also seemed to lead to a higher divorce rate. This is because there is more money available to get divorced and start a second household with all of the requisite bills and start-up costs.

According to the 2011 U.S. Census, Pennsylvania has one of the lowest divorce rates in the nation, with the number slightly below the average of 3.1 divorces per 1000 people. However, the boost of the economy means that people who put off starting their new lives because they didn’t have the money are now able to take that complicated, but sometimes necessary step to move on with their lives.
